Bloom Like Flowers

“The most precious gift we can offer others is our presence. When mindfulness embraces those we love, they will bloom like flowers.”

Thich Nhat Hanh

It is a rare and precious gift when another is truly present with us.  When their attention is undivided and their intention is turned towards and tuned into fully perceiving and receiving us.  It is a miraculous moment.  It is, in my experience, an exquisite meeting of souls where love arises in its most natural and unaffected expression. What I am speaking of is a deep empathic joining that is made possible by the presence of deeply honoring ourselves and others.  Of fully bringing ourselves to these moments of profound connection in our lives.

I recently had an experience of being fully met, seen and celebrated in this way. It is forever etched on my soul.  I will never forget the moment of looking out from deep within me and seeing another looking out from deep within them.  There was no time, no distance, no separation, no other in that moment.  It touched something deeply tucked away inside of me.  An essential aspect of my being, my life that had been long forgotten. Or maybe hidden or distorted…certainly dressed up in disguise.  There was nothing particularly special about the setting, the surroundings.  No new age eye gazing or fancy yoga posing.  It was an unadorned moment of meeting someone’s authentic desire to know, to inquire and to sense and feel their own presence and bring that fully forward into communion with mine.

I came into love in that moment.  Into the reality of the love that is and that arises to be experienced when two or more are gathered in this way.  In honor and in truth. Unmasked, unselfconscious, uninhibited.  It was in this sacred space of presence, of love that a part of me that had been left behind started her ascent, a journey home to take her rightful place in the heart of my life.  She is the seer and the knower of all things.  Things beautiful, things ugly.  She is the one that senses the unseen, unspoken truth.  She is the one that believes that anything can be healed in the love of truth and the truth of love.  She was remembered in presence and came forward in love.

With my whole heart I believe this is the medicine the world needs now.  This is our constant craving.  This is what we hunger for whether we recognize it or not.  This is the cry of our heart.  To see and be seen.  To know and be known.  To love and be loved.  To remember and reclaim the fragments of ourselves that have been left behind, decorating our path like fallen flags.  We gather ourselves in presence.  We are remembered. We unfold what has been tucked away for far too long.  We come home.

This is the promise and possibility of authentic relating. There is no other time like the present to bloom like flowers.
